It was a success and has been unanimously welcomed by attendees. If you think it makes upcoming WordCamps easier, you are probably wrong. Every WordCamp is a new challenge and this new one was about permanently anchoring the annual event into the regular agenda of the Paris community. Moreover you also have to deal with the many expectations the first event has brought up.

A longer event and more diversity into its content are of course ones of the most frequently suggested feedbacks. For sure that would be great! But as the event is free of charge for attendees, all costs are supported by a few generous sponsors, and, as Xavier Borderie wrote into his announcement post : satisfying these expectations would require to double the number of sponsors.

After a successful first WordCamp, let's do this again!

Using means that contributed to the success of the first edition, the organising team is making sure the basics would be there again for this second edition. So the venue, the tools and the format remained unchanged. The time to prepare the event was the only thing that changed as it was extended by a month.

A guest of honor for this second WordCamp

This second WordCamp used once again a no conference format (barcamp), with one exception however! A distinguished guest was able to make a classical talk. This lucky 25-year-old man, at that time, who comes from Texas, enjoyed a transatlantic trip to make a stopover in our beautiful city. He is a fan of photography and is a fond of jazz, which certainly explains why the WordPress major versions are nicknamed as a tribute to virtuosos of this kind of music (John Coltrane for the revolutionary 2.7 was published a few months earlier). With Mike Little he is the co-founder of WordPress and chairs the Automattic company. Of course, he is Matt Mullenweg!

On the 7th of february of 2009 between 11:00am and 6:00pm, WordCamp Paris #2 has been "released"! The coworking space which was a very trendy place for digital barcamps also showed itself almost too small to comfortably host the huge affluence who came. If some attendees were a bit annoyed, most were very happy to be able to meet again or get to know each other. Smiles, kindness and mutual support were once again at the rendezvous.

That year, the attendees could show off their swag! They enjoyed the WordPress stickers, badges, pencils and they had the opportunity to wear one of the most original WordCamp Tshirt! Congratulations to Loguy, its designer.

Matt's famous State of the Word

Around 4pm, Matt arrived on stage and gave his famous "State of the Word". After talking about the WordPress past and future, he focused on the coming 2.8 version features. In particular, he explained how the next Theme Administration would interact with the WordPress.org official Themes directory. He also said a few words about child themes, such a great feature still nowadays.

WordPress is an open source project distributed under the GNU GPL license. And, according to Matt, this is one of the reasons why the software has constantly been improved over the years and is still very popular today. At the time of version 2.7, 150 contributors got involved, they were more than 350 during the latest WordPress release (4.8).

Matt undeniably made a very strong impression to the WordCamp Paris 2009 attendees. They found him very accessible and very friendly. They really appreciated being listened to and being informed about what was coming into the project they support. He proved he was a great "showman" with a lot of charism, wrote Benoît Catherineau on one of his blog post!

State of the Word, barcamp, stars in the eyes of every attendees, the challenge was widely raised for this new WordCamp.
